Student encampment (1986)
In 1986, the Coalition for Responsible Investment (CRI) set up an encampment outside of Laird Hall. The encampment stood from Feb. 5 until Feb. 9, when the Carleton Board of Trustees held an open meeting on the topic of divestment.
This image shows student protesters performing their dedication. The visible hardship of living outside in the snow for several days is the point of this form of protest. Notably, the encampment was positioned in the center of campus. Students and administrators would have often passed through the era. The image also interestingly parallels contemporary student protest movements.
